Turmeric (Curcuma)

Turmeric, also known as Haridra in Sanskrit, is a relatively recent addition to the Western world. It has been used in India and Sri Lanka for both cooking and healing for thousands of years. Its use dates back nearly 4,000 years. Today, India produces nearly 80% of the world's turmeric. No curry is complete without the unique and delicious flavor of this spice, and its healing benefits support nearly every system in the body. Turmeric also holds a special place in Ayurvedic medicine. Ayurvedic practitioners use it for a wide range of purposes. With its bitter, astringent, and pungent taste, it is Tridoshic, meaning its heating quality balances Kapha and Vata doshas, while its bitter taste balances Pitta.

Benefits of Turmeric:

•Anti-inflammatory

•Immunity booster

•Antimicrobial

•Supports and maintains a healthy cardiovascular and circulatory system

•Eases joint pain

•Promotes clear, glowing skin

Research are still ongoing, but there is encouraging evidence that turmeric may also help prevent cancer and fight Alzheimer's disease.

Contraindications:

Turmeric should be avoided in cases of acute hepatitis, jaundice, gallstones, bile duct obstruction, ulcers, and hyperacidity. Caution should be used when taking blood-thinning and platelet-inhibiting medications.

Turmeric has also found its way into the toothpaste and beauty product industries. It's not surprising, given that South Asian and Southeast Asian women have long carried on the tradition of applying turmeric powder to their faces for a golden glow. Traditional Indian brides also apply turmeric paste before their weddings to create a special glow.

With its numerous benefits, turmeric remains an exceptional spice and herb in both the culinary world and Ayurvedic medicine, offering a blend of flavors and healing properties. For the best quality turmeric, we recommend preparing it at home. The process is very simple. For instructions, you can watch our instructional video. Enjoy the powerful healing properties of this golden spice.
