Garlic in Ayurveda

Strong Aroma, Powerful Healing

Garlic, known in Ayurveda as Lasuna, has been valued for thousands of years as both food and medicine. Mentioned in ancient Ayurvedic texts as a powerful Rasayana — a rejuvenating substance that supports vitality and longevity — garlic remains one of the most respected healing plants in traditional medicine.

Originally cultivated in Central Asia, garlic was widely used across ancient India, Egypt and China for its remarkable therapeutic qualities. Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine and ancient Greek medicine all recognized garlic as a powerful natural remedy for supporting health and resilience.

Although many people avoid garlic because of its strong aroma, Ayurveda views it as a highly potent herb whose benefits often far outweigh this minor inconvenience.

Ayurvedic Properties of Garlic

In Ayurveda, garlic is known for its warming, stimulating and penetrating qualities.

It is traditionally described as:

Pungent and slightly sweet in taste

Heating in potency

Sharp, oily and heavy in nature

Garlic is particularly valued for balancing Kapha and supporting Vata when used appropriately, though excessive use may aggravate Pitta due to its strong heating qualities.

Traditional Benefits of Garlic

Ayurveda traditionally uses garlic to support many systems within the body.

Supporting Digestion

Garlic is known to stimulate Agni — the digestive fire — helping improve digestion and reduce bloating or sluggishness.

Cardiovascular Support

Traditionally, garlic has been used to support healthy circulation, blood pressure balance and overall cardiovascular wellbeing.

Natural Immune Support

Ayurveda values garlic for its strong antimicrobial and protective qualities, especially during periods of seasonal imbalance and weakened immunity.

Respiratory Health

Due to its warming and mucus-reducing properties, garlic is often used to support the respiratory system in cases of congestion, colds or coughs.

Joint and Muscle Comfort

Garlic is traditionally recommended in Ayurveda for supporting joint mobility and easing discomfort related to stiffness and Vata imbalance.

Vitality and Strength

As a Rasayana herb, garlic is also believed to support stamina, strength and overall vitality when used mindfully.

Detoxification

Ayurveda traditionally associates garlic with supporting natural cleansing processes and healthy liver function.

When Should Garlic Be Used with Caution?

Although highly valued, garlic is considered a strong herb and should be used appropriately according to the individual constitution.

Ayurveda generally recommends caution in cases involving:

Excess heat or strong Pitta imbalance

Hyperacidity or sensitive digestion

Certain reproductive imbalances

Pregnancy (especially in excessive amounts)

Bleeding disorders or use of blood-thinning medications

Moderation is always considered important.

Traditional Ayurvedic Home Remedies with Garlic

Garlic with Honey

A traditional home remedy for colds and congestion combines crushed garlic with honey. It is commonly used short-term to support immunity and respiratory health.

Lightly Toasted Garlic

Gently dry-toasting garlic cloves softens both the taste and smell while preserving many of its warming and immune-supporting qualities.

Garlic Oil for Joint Comfort

Garlic juice infused in warm sesame oil has traditionally been used externally in massage to support circulation and soothe joint discomfort.

Garlic Oil for Ear Support

Warm garlic-infused oil has long been used in traditional home care for ear discomfort due to its soothing and antimicrobial qualities.

In Ayurveda, garlic is considered one of nature’s most powerful healing herbs — warming, stimulating and deeply supportive when used wisely. Whether enjoyed in cooking, herbal preparations or traditional remedies, it continues to hold an important place in natural healing traditions around the world.

And perhaps Ayurveda would agree with the old saying — garlic not only supports health, but may also help keep unwanted visitors away as well. 😊
