Black Pepper (Piper nigrum)

Black Pepper (Piper nigrum)

Black pepper is one of the main healing spices in Ayurveda. Historically, its most important source was India, particularly the state of Kerala. Its popularity later spread to South Asia and Southeast Asia.Sri Lanka also holds the title for exporting fine quality black pepper.Historical records show that black pepper has been cultivated and used since at least 2000 BC. The Sanskrit term for black pepper is "Marich," a synonym for the sun, as it is hot and piercing like the sun. Its popularity spread to Europe thanks to Silk Road traders, and it became so valuable that it was often used as currency. While today it is mainly used as a food flavoring ingredient, in Ayurveda, it is commonly used in various formulations and as a bioavailability enhancer, helping transport the beneficial properties of other herbs to different parts of the body. Black pepper is a warming spice and is excellent for pacifying Kapha and Vata while increasing Pitta.
